ABOUT US

Derby Friends of Hebron aims to stand with the people of Hebron, raising awareness of the serious difficulties of daily life, including the human rights violations they experience and those experienced by people elsewhere in Palestine.

It also aims to break down widespread negative stereotypes of Palestine and its diaspora and promote an understanding of its history and culture, as well as its hopes for the future.

Hebron is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. It is the largest city in the West Bank of the Palestinian Territories, occupied by Israel since 1967.

The city is home to approximately 245,000 Palestinians and 800 Jewish settlers.  The city is divided into two administrative districts, with the portions containing the settlers under Israeli control.

Links between Derby and Hebron, cities of a similar size, have grown since 2014, when Derby City Council agreed to become a “Sister City” of Hebron through a Memorandum of Understanding which proposed a cultural, political and economic exchange based on shared values of tolerance and respect, with a particular focus on education.
